WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

We are seeking a Dynamical Downscaling and Atmosphere-Ocean Coupling Specialist to join our Regional Models and Geo-Hydrological Impacts (REMHI) division, based in Caserta. The ideal candidate will have a background in dynamical downscaling, atmosphere-ocean interactions, and oceanographic processes.
This role offers the opportunity to contribute to research and development activities focused on improving coupled regional modelling frameworks. The successful candidate will support the calibration and refinement of ocean model components, enhance physical parameterizations, and contribute to the development of high-resolution coupled climate and weather simulations.

ROLE


The Specialist in Dynamical Downscaling and Atmosphere-Ocean Coupling
 reports to the Head of the Regional Models and Geo-Hydrological Impacts (REMHI) division and is responsible for developing and applying advanced regional climate models, integrating ocean component, and contributing to the advancement of coupled Earth system modeling at the regional scale.


RESPONSIBILITIES

The Specialist in Dynamical Downscaling and Atmosphere-Ocean Coupling will support the REMHI division by:
  • Developing and implementing advanced regional climate models, such as coupled system with ICON and COSMO, to simulate atmospheric, oceanographic, and environmental phenomena at the regional scale.
  • Collaborating with interdisciplinary and international teams to design and refine coupled Earth system modelling methodologies.
  • Conducting model validation and sensitivity analysis using observational datasets and reanalysis, ensuring high performance and accuracy of regional output model.
  • Contributing to scientific publications and reports, participating in international conferences, and engaging with research institutions, universities, and government agencies to advance coupled Earth system and regional climate modelling research.
 
REQUIREMENTS
  • Master's degree in Atmospheric and Climate Sciences (or equivalent) or PhD in a relevant field (Physics, Mathematics, Engineering, Environmental Sciences, etc.).
  • Proven experience in regional numerical modelling, with expertise in atmosphere-ocean coupled systems. Experience with ICON or COSMO is considered an asset.
  • Very good knowledge of the English language.
  • Accuracy and good analytical skills.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as FORTRAN, MATLAB, and Python.
  • Experience with mathematical libraries and tools used for numerical analysis.
  • Familiarity with Linux operating systems, with the ability to work across different platforms.
  • Experience with climate data management programs such as CDO (Climate Data Operators) and NCO (NetCDF Operators).
  • Ability to prepare technical/scientific documentation, including project reports and research papers.
  • Availability to travel for limited periods.
  • Willingness to attend face-to-face meetings at the REMHI headquarters in Caserta.
  • Enthusiasm for research and the opportunity to work in a young, multidisciplinary team.

DURATION, COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
  • Please note that this opportunity will be issued both internally and externally.
  • The Managers will be based in Caserta CMCC office.
  • Contract and gross annual salary will be based on qualifications and working experience.
