WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

The European Institute on Economics and the Environment (EIEE), in collaboration with the strategic program Predicting Socio-Economic Outcomes in a Changing Climate, is seeking one Postdoctoral Researcher to work on the socio-economic and policy dimensions of climate change and food security.

The successful candidate will carry out both quantitative and qualitative research, with a focus on risk and impact forecasting, policy analysis, and interdisciplinary collaboration within CMCC and with international partners. The researcher will also contribute to developing evidence-based recommendations to support decision-making at local and national levels.

ROLE

The successful candidate will work within the European Institute on Economics and the Environment (EIEE), one of the three CMCC Institutes. EIEE stands at the intersection of environment and economics, evaluating sustainable and socially inclusive strategies to combat climate change and other major environmental challenges. EIEE is committed to improving environmental, energy, and natural resource decisions through impartial socio-economic research and policy engagement. EIEE is a central hub for research insights and policy solutions, within Europe and internationally.



RESPONSIBILITIES


The successful candidate will be responsible for:
  • econometric analysis of the effects of climate and weather shocks on food insecurity
  • develop machine learning-enhanced forecasting tools for sub-seasonal to seasonal timescales, prioritizing interpretability and policy relevance
  • provide advanced alerts for different time horizons of location and specific seasonal risks to allow and prepare proactive planning and responses
  • strategic communications at the science-policy interface
  • contributing to and supporting cross-CMCC and international collaboration on this topic.
  • writing and contributing to funded projects, scientific publications, and science-policy reports based on this work.
  • present those at scientific workshops and conferences.

REQUIREMENTS

Required Qualifications
  • PhD in economics, environmental economics, environmental science, climatology, data science, or related field (required).
  • Expertise in econometric methods and statistical software (Stata, R, Python).
  • Accuracy and good analytical skills
  • Fluency in English, good presentation and writing skills.
  • Availability to travel to project meetings and conferences
  • Ability to work in an interdisciplinary and diverse environment committed to high-quality research.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Proficiency in machine learning frameworks for forecasting applications.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills to foster collaborative efforts


DURATION, COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
 
  • The position will be based in either in Milan or Venice CMCC office.
  • The appointment period will be initially 12 months, renewable for two additional years pending a positive evaluation.
  • Contract and gross salary will be based on qualifications and working experience and competitive with major research centers in Europe.
