WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
Our Division of Climate Variability and Predictions (CLIVAP), located in Bologna, is looking for a new position of post-graduate or postdoc to support activities of accuracy improvement and temporal extension of Early Warning Systems for extreme events, making use of statistical and/or AI-ML tools.

ROLE
The candidate will be devoted to the implementation of tools for the improvement of forecast abilities under different time horizons, also as part of the MedEWSa EU project activities , where a particular focus will be given to the interaction with project partners (e.g. the Centro Previsioni e Segnalazioni Maree, Center of Predictions and Warnings of Tides of  Venice Municipality) for the extension of the existent sea level Early Warning Systems to the sub-seasonal time horizon.
 

RESPONSIBILITIES

The candidate will support the CLIVAP Division:

  • Improving exiting forecasting tools
  • Implementing new AI based forecasting tools
  • Supporting the preparation of project deliverables
  • Interacting with project partners to facilitate knowledge sharing

REQUIREMENTS
  • Strong focus on research objectives.
  • a PhD or a MSc in scientific disciplines, possibly related to climate dynamics, physics, mathematics or statistics.
  • proven experience in numerical modelling, use of AI-ML tools and/or climate data handling.
  • very good knowledge of UNIX/Linux operating systems and skills in programming language (i.e. Python and Fortran)
  • Good knowledge of the English language.

DURATION, COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
  • Please note that this opportunity will be issued both internally and externally.
  • The Managers will be based in Bologna CMCC office.
  • The appointment period will be initially of 24 months starting from January 2025, with a gross annual salary range of 30-42K Euros. Tenure can be granted from 2 to 4 years after being appointed as a junior researcher.
  • Welfare package, for minimum 12 months contract.
  • Flexible working time as per internal policies.
  • Support during the immigration process, if needed.
