CMCC Position
Climate Engineering Researcher (CDR/SRM)
Deadline: July 19th, 2024

Are you ready to join a dynamic team where your proactiveness and management prowess can translate directly into tangible outcomes in the research field? Our Institute (European Institute on Economics and the Environment) is always looking for bright researchers motivated to work on the defining issue of climate change.
For this position we are encouraging applications by researchers interested in modelling and assessing the implications of climate engineering interventions, specifically either Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) or Solar Radiation Management (SRM), as possible additional strategies to conventional mitigation ones.
We have a portfolio of international research projects on both removing CO2 and CH4 (e.g. UPTAKE, REPAIR), and on assessing solar radiation modification (e.g. CO-CREATE, RFF).
We are looking from one to two candidates to work on either research strand, or possibly combine them. We are interested in the integration of all key aspects of climate engineering, from the technical side to its socio-economic repercussion and its governance.

CMCC Foundation is a cross-cutting scientific research center on climate change and its interactions with the environment, society, the world of business, and policymakers. Our work aims to stimulate sustainable growth, protect the environment, and develop strategies for the adaptation and mitigation of climate change. CMCC's core objective is to conduct cutting-edge science, to train the next generation of scientists at both national and international levels, and to be a beacon for climate modelling.

CMCC pursues fundamental and applied science with utmost scientific integrity, prioritizing data-driven science and providing data, information, and research results that can support informed public debate and decision-making processes. To achieve climate research objectives at the highest international standards, we invest in training all our talents, and strive to create a workplace where everyone can excel.

At CMCC you will find a strong, professional environment. Join an inclusive community that values diversity, where every voice is heard and respected. Help foster a culture of innovation and societal change, where individuals from all backgrounds can thrive and succeed.

Possible tasks include but are not limited to:

  • Developing a comprehensive risk framework for the governance of climate engineering options such as SRM and CDR.
  • Developing methods to represent the heterogeneity and concurrence of climate engineering methods, potential risk multiplier effects, and co-benefits.
  • Developing methods and models to study the diffusion of climate engineering technologies (e.g. CDR solutions)
  • Integration of climate engineering methods and their potential impacts, side-effects, and co-benefits into climate-economy models at regional and national level.
  • Investigating the resources, technological, social, and policy requirements of climate engineering research and development on experimental and commercial levels.
  • Write and contribute to scientific articles and science-policy reports derived from the above work, and present those at scientific workshops and conferences.

The job location is Milan, Italy.

We are looking for a motivated person with the following requirements:
  • PhD in economics, applied mathematics, environmental engineering, or any related fields.
  • Familiarity with climate engineering methods, either CDR or SRM

  • Fluency in English (Italian not needed), good presentation and writing skills.
  • Willingness to travel to project meetings and to conferences.
  • Ability to work in an interdisciplinary and diverse environment committed to high-quality research.
Desirable: Experience with integrated assessment modelling.

  • The appointment period will be initially 24 months, renewable for two additional years pending a positive evaluation. Tenure can be granted from 2 to 4 years after being appointed as a junior researcher;
  • The gross salary will be based on qualification and working experience and competitive with major research centers in Europe;
