WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

The CMCC Foundation – Centro Euro-Mediterraneo sui Cambiamenti Climatici invites applications for one junior researcher specializing in climate and environmental law to join its interdisciplinary research team.


We are looking for a highly motivated junior international scholar to provide support for research, capacity-building and stakeholder engagement activities related to climate law and policy frameworks. Strong research and analytical skills and ability to contribute to policy-relevant outputs are essential.

Successful candidate will join an international and interdisciplinary team based in Milan, Italy, contributing to the strengthening of climate law research and the development of innovative research lines addressing the legal and policy frameworks and their interactions with climate change and society.

ROLE

The selected candidate will work within ATEC, the Advanced Training and Education Center, a central hub for training in Europe and internationally. ATEC operates at the intersection of climate science, policy, and society, bridging over two decades of CMCC scientific research and climate data with capacity-building, training, and knowledge-sharing activities.

The Center is committed to advancing global climate action through high-level education on climate change, specialized training on the science–policy interface and climate governance, and capacity enhancement in the design and scaling up of effective, long-term climate change adaptation solutions.

ATEC hosts knowledge incubators that explore new research topics at the forefront of the interaction between diverse scientific domains.

Climate Law is one of ATEC’s knowledge incubators and aims to foster cutting-edge research, interdisciplinary collaboration, and targeted training to bridge the gap between scientific knowledge and legal practice. This emerging initiative seeks to equip legal practitioners, policymakers, and researchers with the critical expertise needed to navigate the evolving legal landscape of climate change, grounded in the best available science and addressing legal and governance challenges through a science-based approach.




RESPONSIBILITIES

The selected candidate will contribute to expanding the Center’s research capacity in climate law.
Key research areas include:
  • Contributing to interdisciplinary research on climate law, litigation and governance, paying particular attention to integrating climate science into legal and policy frameworks.
  • Contributing to interdisciplinary research on social justice, public acceptance, and equity related to climate policies. 
  • Supporting the preparation of scientific publications, policy briefs, position papers and policy recommendations.
  • Assisting with capacity-building activities for legal professionals, policymakers, researchers and students, such as training events, seminars and workshops.
  • Identifying and supporting the preparation of funding opportunities, including contributions to research proposals and grant applications.
  • Contributing to project reports, deliverables and dissemination activities.


REQUIREMENTS
  • PhD in Law, Political Science, Environmental Policy or equivalent subjects.
  • Minimum of 2 years of work experience in climate law and policy frameworks.
  • Very good knowledge of the English language.
  • Accuracy and good analytical skills.
  • Experience with interdisciplinary research, surveys and qualitative–quantitative methodologies is an asset.
  • Ability to work effectively in international and interdisciplinary research environments.

 

DURATION, COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
  • Please note that this opportunity will be issued both internally and externally
  • The Managers will be based in Milan CMCC office
  • Contract and gross annual salary will be based on qualifications and working experience
  • Welfare package, for minimum 12 months contract
  • Support during the immigration process, if needed
  • Flexible working time as per internal policies.
