WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
The CMCC Foundation – Centro Euro-Mediterraneo sui Cambiamenti Climatici invites applications for up to three senior integrated assessment modellers to join its interdisciplinary research team.
We welcome applications from international scholars working on climate change and environmental economics. In particular, we seek candidates with a strong and well-established research profile in integrated assessment modelling, with expertise in one or more model components, including energy systems, macroeconomic modelling, land-use dynamics, climate processes, air pollution, mitigation pathways, and impact assessment.
The successful candidates will join an international and interdisciplinary research environment, and will contribute to strengthening CMCC’s core research areas. They are also expected to play a key role in developing new research lines that address climate and environmental challenges of high scientific and societal relevance.

ROLE
The successful candidates will work within the European Institute on Economics and the Environment (EIEE), one of the three CMCC Institutes. EIEE stands at the intersection of environment and economics, evaluating sustainable and socially inclusive strategies to combat climate change and other major environmental challenges. EIEE is committed to improving environmental, energy, and natural resource decisions through impartial socio-economic research and policy engagement. EIEE is a central hub for research insights and policy solutions, within Europe and internationally.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Integrated assessment modelling for environmental and energy policy analysis, particularly with the WITCH integrated assessment model.
- Energy policy, environmental economics, and pathways towards net-zero and beyond.
- Modelling of international and national climate policies, including current policies, national pledges, and long-term strategies.
- Decision-making under uncertainty and advances in optimisation and decision-analytic frameworks.
- Low-carbon transition pathways, climate mitigation scenarios, and system-wide transition analysis across economic, energy, and environmental systems.
- Climate change and its interactions with air pollution.
The selected candidates are expected to make substantive contributions to the Institute’s research agenda, advance integrated assessment and policy-relevant modelling approaches, and play an active role in securing external research funding. They will contribute to both internally and externally funded research projects and are expected to engage in collaborative research activities within the Institute and with external partners.
REQUIREMENTS
We are particularly interested in candidates with strong expertise in one or more of the following areas:
- Proven expertise and established track-record in developing integrated assessment models
- Computational modelling based on economic frameworks, with demonstrated proficiency in GAMS and R
- Multi-scale economy–energy–climate modelling
- Clean energy systems and energy markets
- Air pollution modelling and economic valuation
- Ex-post and ex-ante evaluation of climate and environmental policies
- Robust optimisation and decision analysis under deep uncertainty
Successful candidates are expected to meet most of the following criteria:
- At least 10 years of post-PhD experience in applied mathematics, engineering, economics, or closely related disciplines
- Proven capacity to lead research groups in integrated assessment modelling
- Excellent command of English (knowledge of Italian is not required), with strong written and oral communication skills
- Willingness to travel for project meetings, workshops, and international conferences
- Proven ability to work effectively in interdisciplinary and international research environments committed to high-quality research
- Experience in the preparation and management of European Commission–funded research projects
- A strong publication record, with well-cited contributions in leading interdisciplinary and field-relevant journals
DURATION, COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
- The positions are primarily based at the CMCC Milan office. In exceptional circumstances, and depending on the candidate’s profile and role, remote collaboration arrangements may be considered.
- The appointment period will be initially for 12 months and renewable pending a positive evaluation.
- Contract and gross annual salary will be based on qualifications and working experience competitive with major research centers in Europe.
- Flexible working time as per internal policies.
- Welfare package, for minimum 12 months contract.
- Support during the immigration process, if needed.
- Tax benefits for individuals relocating to Italy: Individuals of any nationality who move their residence to Italy may be eligible for substantial income tax reductions under the “Rientro dei Cervelli” (Return of Brains) scheme, available for up to five years.
