WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
The CMCC European Institute on Economics and the Environment (EIEE) is looking to hire researchers with competencies in climate/environmental economics. We encourage applications from postdocs and junior scientists (though other seniorities will be considered) to join our research team in Milan.
For this position we are encouraging applications by researchers interested in investigating the rapid upscaling of emerging climate solutions.
We have a portfolio of international research projects on both removing CO2 and CH4 (e.g. UPTAKE, REPAIR), and on assessing solar radiation modification (e.g. CO-CREATE, RFF).
We are looking from a candidate to help us develop a comprehensive assessment framework for better understanding of and comparing the technical, financial, and social requirements for the uptake of these technologies considering their potential, cost, risks, side-effects, and co-benefits. We are interested in the integration of all key aspects of climate solutions, from the technical side to its socio-economic repercussions and its governance.

RESPONSIBILITIES
The successful candidate is expected to work closely with our teams developing climate engineering modules, investigating their uncertainty and risk, and improving the representation of their effectiveness and impacts in our coupled climate-economy models. - Developing a comprehensive framework to assess the rapid uptake of climate solutions in terms of feasibility, scalability, and acceptability.
- Developing methods to represent the heterogeneity and concurrence of climate solutions, potential risk multiplier effects, and co-benefits across sectors and regions.
- Investigating the resources, technological, social, and policy requirements for the rapid uptake of climate solutions, including research and development on experimental and commercial levels.
- Write and contribute to scientific articles and science-policy reports derived from the above work, and present those at scientific workshops and conferences.
The job location is Milan, Italy.
REQUIREMENTS
We are looking for a motivated person with the following requirements:
- PhD in public policy, economics, technology management, engineering, or any related fields.
- Familiarity with climate policy, climate solutions, and decarbonization technologies
- Fluency in programming languages such as python, julia or R.
- Fluency in English (Italian not needed), good presentation and writing skills.
- Willingness to travel to project meetings and to conferences.
- Ability to work in an interdisciplinary and diverse environment committed to high-quality research.
Desirable: Experience with integrated assessment modelling.
DURATION, COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
- The appointment period will be initially 24 months, renewable for two additional years pending a positive evaluation. Tenure can be granted from 2 to 4 years after being appointed as a junior researcher.
- The gross salary will be based on qualifications and working experience and competitive with major research centers in Europe.
- CMCC provides some additional benefits like welfare package, flexible working time, support during the immigration process, if needed.
