WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
The Institute for Earth System Prediction (IESP) is seeking a motivated Junior Regional Ocean Modeler to join the Ocean Modeling team within the Regional Ocean Forecasting Systems (ROFS) division. We are looking for individuals with a foundation in numerical ocean modeling and a keen interest in advancing ocean reanalysis and ocean forecasting capabilities.

ROLE
The Regional Ocean Modeler will contribute to projects and services through research, development implementation and validation of ocean numerical models at regional scale.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The candidate will collaborate and support the ROFS Division in the research and development of numerical ocean models, on their implementation at regional scale, specifically in the Mediterranean and Black Seas, and on the analysis and assessment of the numerical results including model validation with respect to observational data.
REQUIREMENTS
- PhD or equivalent experience in Physics, Physical Oceanography, Applied Mathematics, Engineering or related disciplines with a strong research background in numerical methods and modelling
- Experience in the development of numerical methods applied to geophysical fluid dynamics problems
- Experience in development and/or application of ocean circulation models
- Good knowledge of compiled (i.e. Fortran) and interpreted (Python, R, MatLab) programming languages
- Knowledge of UNIX/Linux operating systems and scripting languages (i.e. *nix shell)
- Knowledge of parallel programming on HPC architectures
- Good communication skills and ability to work in an interdisciplinary team
- Fluency in English
DURATION, COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
- Please note that this opportunity will be issued both internally and externally
- The Regional Ocean Modeler will be based in Bologna CMCC office
- The appointment period will be initially of 24 months starting from November 2025, with a gross annual salary range of 21-40K Euros depending on the experience.
- Tenure can be granted from 2 to 4 years.
