The Integration of the planetary biogeochemical and industrial Carbon Cycle (ICC) Program is one of four strategic research programs within CMCC, focusing on understanding and shaping the new paradigm of building a net-zero carbon economy which is essential to providing quantitative and narrative analyses of socio-economic systems in the context of a sustainable and resilient future.

ROLE

At CMCC-ICC, we bridge science and policy to address the world’s most pressing climate challenges. In this role, you’ll turn complex climate datasets into compelling insights and visual stories that shape decisions, support policy, and inspire action. We’re looking for a dynamic and creative Data Science, Visualization, and Communication (DSVC) Expert to help us not only analyze data—but also tell compelling stories with it.




RESPONSIBILITIES

The DSVC Expert will support the ICC program, with:
  • Provide creative input on how to enhance audience engagement through effective data presentation.
  • Collaborate with scientists and researchers to translate analytical results into clear narratives for policymakers, researchers, and the public, using machine learning and AI techniques relevant to the integration of climate and economic systems.
  • Develop high-impact visualizations and digital products (dashboards, infographics, interactive tools) to make complex data accessible to stakeholders.
  • Develop visual content that aligns with the communication and outreach goals of ICC and CMCC (e.g., for policy briefs, the Foresight magazine, external stakeholders, and events).
  • Collaborate across disciplines—climate science, economics, social sciences—to ensure cohesive and impactful communication.

REQUIREMENTS
  • Strong proficiency in machine learning, AI modeling, and large-scale data analysis.
  • Experience with visualization tools such as Python (Plotly, Bokeh), R (ggplot2, Shiny), Tableau, D3.js, or similar.
  • Exceptional communication skills: the ability to explain complex insights in a clear, engaging, and policy-relevant way.
  • Passion for climate research and commitment to science-based, societal impact.
  • Excellent written and spoken English.
  • A collaborative mindset and proven experience working in interdisciplinary environments.


DURATION, COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
  • Please note that this opportunity will be issued both internally and externally.
  • The DSVC expert will be based in the CMCC Milano office.
  • Contract and gross annual salary will be based on qualifications and working experience.
  • Welfare package, for minimum 12 months contract.
  • Flexible working time as per internal policies.
  • Support during the immigration process, if needed.
