CMCC Position cod. 12772
Junior Atmospheric Scientist — Modelling & Data Assimilation
Deadline: October, 5th, 2025

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

We are seeking up to 2 Junior Atmospheric Scientists to join PRESTO, the REMHI unit dedicated to development of tools for short-range prediction, real-time monitoring of extreme events, and data assimilation for very high resolution dynamical models. The ideal candidate couples a solid background in meteorology/met-ocean applications hands-on experience working with observed and simulated atmospheric data and a strong motivation to work on nowcasting, high-resolution NWP, and data assimilation workflows (quality control of observations, preprocessing, experiment setup, verification).

ABOUT US

CMCC Foundation is a cross-cutting scientific research center on climate change and its interactions with the environment, society, the world of business, and policymakers. Our work aims to stimulate sustainable growth, protect the environment, and develop strategies for the adaptation and mitigation of climate change. ROLE

This role offers an exciting opportunity to support the development of atmospheric models and tools for nowcasting and data assimilation activities in PRESTO, helping translate observations and model output into actionable information for internal users and partners. The role includes operating dataflows (surface/radar/satellite/lightning), contributing to limited-area NWP runs, running assimilation experiments. You will also collaborate with REMHI colleagues to integrate indicators and functionalities into Dataclime and contribute to post-event analyses of high-impact weather.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Junior Atmospheric Scientists will support the REMHI Division, with:
  • Contribute to the definition and implementation of tools for nowcasting (0–12 h)
  • Operate and monitor real-time data ingestion and quality control for multi-source observations (surface networks, radar mosaics, satellite EO, lightning).
  • Support data assimilation experiments (observation preprocessing, background/analysis checks, configuration, and run monitoring) and maintain concise technical documentation.
  • Work with high-resolution limited-area NWP runs (pre/post-processing, schedule monitoring, failure recovery).
  • Compute verification metrics for nowcasting/NWP (scores, maps, dashboards) and contribute to retrospective case studies.
  • Prepare maps/plots and short technical notes for internal users and stakeholders; contribute to workshops and dissemination.
Collaborate with REMHI teams to surface near-real-time indicators on Dataclime and support project deliverables.

REQUIREMENTS
  • M.Sc. in Meteorology/Atmospheric Physics, Earth/Environmental Sciences, or related fields.
  • Knowledge of nowcasting techniques, NWP fundamentals, and data assimilation concepts.
  • Proficiency in processing and analyzing multiple types of data (weather, climate, EO etc.), with background in spatial analysis and statistics
  • Experience in programming with Python and knowledge of Python scientific libraries (i.e., xarray, numpy, pandas, matplotlib, Jupyter notebooks);
  • Familiarity with typical climate data formats (e.g., NetCDF)
  • Experience with data visualization tools (also web tool)
  • Knowledge of the most common OS (such as Linux and Windows), with the ability to work across different platforms.
  • Experience in writing technical/scientific documentation, including project reports and research papers.
  • Problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication in English.

ADDITIONAL SKILLS
  • Exposure to EO/satellite and weather radar datasets; experience with near-real-time data pipelines.
  • Basics of data assimilation frameworks and observation operators.
  • Knowledge of weather verification methods

DURATION, COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
  • Please note that this opportunity will be issued both internally and externally.
  • The Researcher will be based in Caserta CMCC office.
  • Contract and gross annual salary will be based on qualifications and working experience
  • Welfare package, for minimum 12 months contract.
  • Flexible working time as per internal policies.
  • Support during the immigration process, if needed.
