12627 - Ice Sheet Modeller
Bologna, Italy
Full Time
Institute for Earth System Predictions (IESP)
Experienced
CMCC Position
Ice sheet modeller
Deadline: December 1st, 2024
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
The Division of Earth System Modelling and Data Assimilation (ESYDA) at the Institute for Earth System Predictions (IESP) is seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic researcher specialising in Ice Sheet and Earth System Modelling.
The successful candidate will play a key role in enhancing our ability to simulate and understand ice sheet variability in the context of Earth's changing climate. The future evolution of the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets is crucial, as it will shape the global impacts of sea level rise. Their physical interactions with the broader climate system have the potential to cross critical thresholds, triggering accelerated and possibly irreversible ice loss.

ROLE
This position focuses on the development of the cryosphere component in the CMCC-ESM, in particular on leading-edge of ice sheet modelling, simulating and understanding key mechanisms of the ice sheet evolution. Particular interest lies in improving the coupling methods between the Community Ice Sheet Model (CISM) and the ocean component (NEMO).
You will work with a multi-disciplinary team of scientists within the ESYDA Division and will be a part of the network of scientists who develop and run the CMCC Earth System Model, but also collaborate with other international modelling groups. This position is partially funded by the National Project PNRR-Spoke 4.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The successful candidate will contribute to the model implementation, and will be responsible for design, conduct simulations and analysing to trigger large-scale changes in the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets. You will analyse the associated interactions with the ocean, atmosphere and solid earth, and evaluate the global climatic consequences. Publication and wide dissemination of your findings will be a particularly important part of this role.
The candidate should have a proactive and constructive approach, a good problem-solving skill, easy to adapt to changing priorities, working autonomously and capable to work on a diverse range of tasks to fulfil deadlines.
