ROLE 

The successful candidate will be supporting the researchers in the Marine Biogeochemistry group of CMCC’s Earth System Modelling and Data Assimilation in developing CMCC’s modelling infrastructure for the marine carbon cycle using traditional deterministic andor AI approaches and analysing their results to identify the processes that drive the changes in the marine carbon cycle with a specific focus on marine based mitigation strategies  for the reduction of atmospheric carbon-dioxide concentrations.


RESPONSIBILITIES
The candidate will support the marine biogeochemistry group in the ESYDA division with:
  • The design of new process formulations and approaches enhancing CMCC’s biogeochemical modelling infrastructure
  • Analysing model projections assessing the marine carbon cycle and its uncertainties
  • Assessing the efficiencies and impacts of marine Carbon-Dioxide Removal implementations and Nature Based Solutions

REQUIREMENTS
  • PhD in Climate Science and Ocean Biogeochemistry or equivalent subjects.
  • Minimum of 3 years of work experience in marine modelling.
  • Very good knowledge of the English language.
  • Accuracy and good analytical skills.
  • Experience in scientific programming and data analysis, demonstrated skills in python and/or FORTRAN programming as well as parallel computing;
  • Previous experience and skills in the field of deterministic and/or AI based biogeochemical modelling. Knowledge of the NEMO and BFM consortium models is of particular advantage.

DURATION, COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
  • Please note that this opportunity will be issued both internally and externally.
  • The successful candidate will be based in the CMCC offices in Bologna.
  • Welfare package, for minimum 12 months contract.
  • The appointment period will be initially of 24 months starting as early as September 2025, but no later than April 2026, with a gross annual salary range of 30.000-38.000 Euros. Tenure can be granted from 2 to 4 years after being appointed as a junior researcher
  • Flexible working time as per internal policies.
  • Support during the immigration process, if needed.
