The CMCC seasonal forecasting unit is seeking a skilled Operational Forecaster to join the team.
In this role, you'll be responsible for producing and validating operational seasonal forecasts, collaborating with scientists, and delivering actionable insights to stakeholders.

ROLE

The Incumbent will support the seasonal forecast unit of the CLIVAP division, optimizing, developing and implementing tools for seasonal forecast runs and the relative output investigation.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES
 

The Seasonal Forecaster will support the CLIVAP division with:
  •  production and validation of operational seasonal forecasts;
  • maintaining the seasonal forecast operational chain;
  • analyzing the model results;
  • monitoring model performances, refining outputs based on bias correction and developing diagnostics and products for end users;
  • preparing and presenting forecast products (charts, technical bulletins, summary reports);
  • stay current on forecast methodologies, tools, and best practices.


REQUIREMENTS
 
  • Master's or PhD in Meteorology, Atmospheric Sciences, Climate Science, or related field;
  • proven experience with weather/seasonal forecasts using ensemble system;
  • strong quantitative skills: time-series, statistical modelling, predictive analytics;
  • programming proficiency (Fortran, Python, R, or equivalent);
  • programming proficiency in bash;
  • experience with ensemble verification metrics and forecast evaluation methods;
  • ability to work in team;
  • flexibility to work during holidays and on a shift basis;
  • experience in AI and ML will be considered a plus;
  • english level C1.


DURATION, COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
  • Please note that this opportunity will be issued both internally and externally.
  • The position will be based in Bologna CMCC office.
  • Contract and gross annual salary will be based on qualifications and working experience.
  • Welfare package, for minimum 12 months contract.
  • Flexible working time as per internal policies.
  • Support during the immigration process, if needed.
