Postdoc positions in ocean and sea ice modelling
Deadline: February 24th, 2025

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

We are seeking two highly motivated postdoctoral researchers to join our Earth System Model (ESM) team, focusing on the development and application of numerical models for ocean and sea ice systems. These positions aim to advance numerical modeling capabilities, with a specific interest in fine-resolution processes and their impact, addressing challenges ranging from short-term forecasting to long-term climate projections.
There will be significant flexibility to work across several projects and regarding the scientific questions to be explored, allowing researchers to align their studies with the broad scope of the division, the diverse expertise of the modeling team, and their own creative insights. These positions will play a critical role in advancing the capabilities of the components of the CMCC Earth System Model, particularly by improving its performance, accuracy and scientific robustness. The research will focus on a wide range of applications, spanning from operational short-term forecasts, aimed at addressing immediate environmental challenges, to long-term climate projections, which are essential for understanding and mitigating the impacts of climate change on a global scale.

ROLE

The candidates will contribute to addressing critical challenges in model development, such as integrating fine-scale processes, improving parameterizations, and coupling multiple Earth system components, these roles will contribute to increasing the overall model complexity and realism.
The successful candidates will be responsible for the effective and timely development and implementation of global-scale numerical models. Candidates should have a strong background in ocean numerical modeling—such as NEMO, ROMS, or MOM—or in sea ice modeling, such as SI3 or CICE, as well as a solid understanding of climate variability and ocean-ice interactions.

1. Postdoctoral Researcher in Ocean Modelling
The successful candidate will work on developing, implementing, and optimizing the NEMO global ocean configurations. Responsibilities include:
  • Improving numerical frameworks for ocean dynamics across temporal and spatial scales.
  • Conducting simulations to support operational forecasting and climate scenario analysis.
  • Integrating observational datasets and advancing data assimilation techniques.
  • Contributing to the coupling of ocean models with other components of the Earth System Model.
2. Postdoctoral Researcher in Sea Ice Modelling

The successful candidate will focus on advancing the modeling of sea ice processes within the ESM framework. Responsibilities include:
  • Enhancing the representation of sea ice dynamics and thermodynamics in numerical models.
  • Developing and testing tools to evaluate sea ice interactions with oceanic and atmospheric components.
  • Conducting experiments for both real-time forecasts and future climate projections.
  • Collaborating with team members to improve coupled model performance.

REQUIREMENTS
  • PhD in physical oceanography, climate science, physics, applied mathematics or related relevant fields, or at least three years of demonstrated experience in numerical modeling and Earth system research.
  • Advanced computer literacy, programming skills, scientific computation (you will work with complex FORTRAN and PYTHON codes in a UNIX / LINUX environment)
  • Confident at data analysis and data processing using tools (e.g. Python or MATLAB), experience of working in High Performance Computing environment
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Evidence of ability to work independently and in teams

DURATION, COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

  • Please note that this opportunity will be issued both internally and externally.
  • The position will be based in Bologna CMCC office.
  • The positions are available with flexible start dates in spring 2025. The initial appointment will be for a period of 12 months, with the possibility of renewal. Tenure may be granted after 2 to 4 years, contingent upon the candidate’s progression and successful appointment as a junior researcher. The gross annual salary will range from 28.000 to 35.000 Euros, depending on qualifications and experience.
  • Welfare package, for minimum 12 months contract.
  • Flexible working time as per internal policies.
  • Support during the immigration process, if needed.
