WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
The Institute for Earth System Prediction (IESP) is seeking a motivated Post-Doctoral Researcher or Junior Scientist to join the data assimilation team within the Regional Ocean Forecasting Systems (ROFS) division. We are looking for individuals with a strong foundation in physical and/or computational sciences and a keen interest in advancing ocean forecasting capabilities.

ROLE
The successful candidate will work at the forefront of operational oceanography, focusing on the development of advanced data assimilation and machine learning techniques. These methodologies aim to enhance ocean estimates through the integration of space-borne and in-situ observations. You will collaborate with an enthusiastic and multidisciplinary team of researchers and engineers, contributing to cutting-edge innovations in regional ocean forecasting. The successful candidate will be part of the data assimilation team in the ROFS division at CMCC that develops and maintains the data assimilation component of the Copernicus Marine Service Mediterranean Sea and Black Sea Analysis & Forecast and Reanalysis Systems.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Analyzing Mediterranean and Black Sea observational products
- Exploring methodologies to integrate them in ocean models
- Developing techniques and tools to ingest them in the regional systems maintained by ROFS.
- Publishing research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at scientific conferences.
QUALIFICATIONS
Essential:
- A Ph.D in Physics, Geophysics, Applied Mathematics, or related scientific disciplines with a research background.
- Experience in numerical modeling and/or data assimilation and/or machine learning.
- Strong programming skills (Python and Fortran preferably)
- Knowledge of UNIX/Linux operating systems and scripting languages (e.g., bash
- Excellent communication skills and a track record of publishing in peer-reviewed journals.
Desirable:
- Knowledge of NEMO ocean circulation model.
- Experience of variational ocean data assimilation
- Code development using version controlling systems (e.g., git).
- Experience in high performance computers (HPC)
DURATION, COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
- Please note that this opportunity will be issued both internally and externally.
- The Data Assimilation Expert will be based in Bologna or Lecce CMCC office.
- The appointment period will be initially of 24 months starting from December 2024/January 2025, with a gross annual salary range of 28-50K Euros depending on the experience. Tenure can be granted from 2 to 4 years after being appointed as a junior researcher.
