CMCC Position

Ocean Biogeochemistry Modeller and Data Analyst

(Post-doc or Junior Scientist)

(Deadline: January 31, 2023)

The CMCC Foundation is a scientific research center on climate change and its interactions with the environment, the society, the world of business and policy makers.

Our work aims to stimulate sustainable growth, protect the environment and develop strategies for the adaptation and mitigation of climate change.

Our Division of Ocean Modeling and Data Assimilation (ODA) is looking for an Ocean Modeller (Post-doc or Junior Scientist ) to work within the Research Unit for Marine Biogeochemistry and Earth System Modelling.

The primary purpose of this position is to enhance our in-house modelling portfolio based on the Biogeochemical Flux Model (?). The activities will include implementation of the BFMcoupling to physical ocean models at structured and unstructured mesh and to our Earth System Model CMCC-ESM2 for applications ranging from local to global scale. Current key research priorities focus on coastal processes, polar biogeochemical processes including sea-ice biogeochemistry, the marine carbon cycle and parametrisation of marine-based negative emission pathways (nature-based and technology based). The candidate is further expected to work on the analysis of our simulations in the context of global biogeochemical cycles, mitigation and adaptation of climate change as well as biodiversity and ecosystem services.

These activities require a solid base in geoscientific modelling, in-depth knowledge of the scientific state of the art and of the most recent developments in data analysis and statistical methods (e.g. machine learning and artificial intelligence).

The job location is at the CMCC premises in Bologna, BO, Italy.

We are looking for a motivated person with the following requirements:

  • PhD in natural sciences with experience in the fields of oceanography, marine biogeochemistry and ecosystems. Other PhDs in the field of geosciences and statistical sciences will be also considered;
  • High standard of scientific outputs, as proven by your scientific track record (considering a career level in line with the position offered);
  • Consolidated experience in scientific programming and data analysis, demonstrated skills in FORTRAN and/or python programming as well as parallel computing;
  • proficient skills of spoken and written English;
  • collaborative skills in a highly competitive environment.

Belonging to legally protected categories (ex L. 68/99) will constitute a preferential condition.

Some fiscal benefits could be applied for repatriated workers or foreign researchers/professors, having the requirements defined by Dlgs 147/2015 (for repatriates) or Dl 78/2010 (for foreigners).

We offer the opportunity to join our team through a temporary contract of 24 months starting as soon as possible, but no later than March 2023, with the possibility of contract extension based on performance, results achieved and new project opportunities.

Annual salary from 28000 to 36000 Euros (post-doc) or 36000-48000 Euros (Junior Scientist) comprehensive of benefits, depending on qualification and experience.

This job announcement is a public invitation to express interest for the above mentioned CMCC Position.
